We’re finally writing!

by Tom Shafer

Last night at Overflow was freaking sick! We re-introduced a song Duane has been in the process of writing for quite a while now (called “No God But You”) and it went swimmingly… I’m really excited. As I see it, the Overflow band this semester was put together for a couple of purposes (musically speaking, of course).

  • Raise the (already high, imo) level of proficiency.
  • Begin to write songs for the entire church body.
Writing always makes me nervous. I mean, it’s easy to cover someone else’s songs. If you don’t like the song, you can either try to change it around (another thing we’ve begun to really stress this semester) or pass your frustration off on the author. But writing your own songs is pressure. If you don’t like what you’re writing what can you do? it’s a tough thing to criticize someone else’s guitar parts if you’ve never written any yourself.

In any case, last night was amazing. This is the first time I can remember being a part of the introduction of a new song where I felt good about it. The music was good and the vocal hook of the song is excellent. I’m just excited… we’re only 3 weeks into this new semester and we’re already beginning to accomplish the goals we set for ourselves. Give this new song a couple more weeks and it should be getting pretty well polished. Even better, we already have a couple more songs queued up for addition as they are completed.

If that wasn’t encouraging enough for me, we’re getting Brooks back next week from a broken thumb (playing FourSquare – are you kidding me?) so we’ll have our full compliment of electric guitar glory for the first time in a month or more!
